When he completed his residency training in neurological surgery, in recognition of his stellar research outcomes, he received the highest award for research from the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and graduated cum laude. In 2013, just as he was poised to consolidate his life’s work, at the peak of his professional career, Kalanithi was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died in March 2015.
