Author : Desmond M. Tutu, Mpho A. Tutu

This book was written by South African Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu and his daughter Mpho A. Tutu. When the Republic of South Africa was founded, Desmond Tutu proposed the concept of the “rainbow nation,” seeking to make his beautiful country a place where people with diverse racial backgrounds could live together like a rainbow. Desmond M. Tutu has seen and experienced all kinds of suffering and consequently realized that forgiveness is the only way to achieve real freedom. This book was recommended by Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama. Archbishop Desmond Tutu was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Mpho A. Tutu is an experienced missionary, who also teaches and writes. Due to the influence of her father, Mpho Tutu has always been interested in exploring the path to forgiveness, and even wrote her Ph.D. thesis on it.

Key Insights from The Book of Forgiving

  • Forgiveness is a transformative process that requires both the victim and the perpetrator to engage in healing, emphasizing the mutual benefit of forgiveness. Desmond Tutu and Mpho Tutu highlight that true forgiveness can liberate individuals from the burden of anger and pain, restoring their dignity and humanity.
  • The authors outline a structured process of forgiveness, which includes telling the story, naming the hurt, granting forgiveness, and renewing or releasing the relationship. This structured approach not only helps individuals understand their feelings but also paves the way for emotional and psychological healing.
  • The importance of self-forgiveness is emphasized as the authors assert that one cannot fully forgive others without first forgiving oneself. They encourage readers to recognize their own flaws and transgressions as a crucial step towards embracing a more empathetic and forgiving view towards others.
