Author : Mortimer J. Adler

This book was written by two authors. The first is Mortimer J. Adler, who was a scholar, educator, and editor. He was the chief editor for ‘Great Books of the Western World’ and directed the editing for the 15th edition of the ‘Encyclopedia Britannica’. The second author was Charles van Doren, who was a professor at Columbia University and later left his position to edit the ‘Encyclopedia Britannica’ with Adler. He provided substantial literary input and rewrote the first edition of this book. Thus, both their names were on the new 1970 edition of this book.

Key Insights from How To Read A Book

  • Reading is an active process that involves understanding the author's message and engaging with the text, rather than passively consuming information. Adler emphasizes the importance of asking questions and seeking answers while reading to enhance comprehension and retention.
  • Adler categorizes reading into different levels: elementary, inspectional, analytical, and syntopical, each requiring distinct skills and approaches. Mastering these levels enables readers to gain deeper insights and connections between multiple texts.
  • The book advocates for the practice of syntopical reading, where the reader compares and contrasts ideas from various authors on the same topic. This method fosters critical thinking and helps cultivate a more nuanced understanding of complex subjects.
