John Hersey was born in 1914 to Protestant missionary parents from the Young Men's Christian Association, in Tianjin, China. At the age of ten, he returned to the United States with his parents and completed his studies at Yale and Cambridge University. Throughout World War II, he traveled east and west, writing for Time, Life, and The New Yorker. In addition to Hiroshima, his works include Men on Bataan, Into the Valley, and the 1945 Pulitzer Prize-winning A Bell for Adano.
